Claire Keatinge
Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland

“I am delighted to have been appointed as the first Commissioner for Older People for Northern Ireland.

The Commission has been created by the Northern Ireland Executive and I am very pleased that there is active support for my work across all of our political parties.

I am, however, independent from government and I will be a strong authoritative voice that champions the rights and interests of older people.

I look forward to meeting many older people across Northern Ireland and hearing their views on the issues that matter most to them.

Older people make an enormous contribution to society, and society is greatly enriched by the full participation of older people.

The commission will speak with a strong voice on the issues that concern older people, and about the challenges they face in leading dignified fulfilled lives.

Older people have the right to be treated fairly, equally and with respect. Their contribution to society must be recognised and valued.

Through the Commission I will be challenging age discrimination; promoting the best in health, social care and public services; and making sure that the views and experiences of older people are widely understood by government so that their rights and interests can be best promoted and protected.

The experience, knowledge and support of older people will be central to my work.”
